On April 3rd, UK electronic pioneers Paul and Phil Hartnoll, aka Orbital, return with their first new album in eight years. Titled Wonky, the duo’s eighth album was recorded in their Brighton home with production by landmark electronic producer Mark “Flood” Ellis (U2, Nine Inch Nails). Described as “timeless and contemporary” by its press release, the two brothers conceived the project amidst their triumphant return to the live scene, which has included appearances at both Coachella and Glastonbury. For the past year, they’ve been testing out the new material in their DJ sets.
“That was really beneficial to our writing,” Phil states in the same press release. “Trying out tracks in front of audiences, listening through their ears, getting responses. That’s been a really good string to our bow.”
Although, the album wasn’t too hard to string together. “The whole process of this album has really been a case of the book writing itself,” Paul continues. Wonky reportedly follows “an emotional and musical ‘road map’” orchestrated by the two brothers, which altogether “puts a vividly modern spin on their signature blend of richly melodic, deeply emotive electronica.”
To support its release, Orbital has announced a series of UK dates come April. Check out those below, in addition to a video for the previously released “Never”, just one of many “deeply emotive” cuts off Wonky.
Wonky arrives in the U.S. on April 3rd. A record label has yet to be announced.
