The Postal Service, vocalist Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), producer Jimmy Tamborello (of Dntel and Headset) and vocalist/keyboardist Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), are prepping for their "anniversary tour" 10 years after they released their sole album 'Give Up'. Crowds throughout the nation are eager to catch The Postal Service live in concert after many of us missed their one and only tour supporting the release of 'Give Up' in 2003. There are currently 16 dates on their tour roster, many of them already sold out. The tour kicks off April 9th, 2013 in Reno, NV and is ending with a two night show in Berkeley, CA. The response has been overwhelming, hopefully we'll see a few more dates tossed in. Full calendar listed at the bottom of the page Many people, including myself, believed that the The Postal Service wouldn't be resurfacing. Though In 2008 talk came up about a second album. It seemed everyone was a bit too busy with their other bands and a product never came...They will now be re-issuing the album 'Give Up', but this time with 2 new tracks. The first, below, A Tattered Line of String features vocals from Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) which really fills out the track and brings back the original sound of The Postal Service. While this track isn't really in the same realm as the stuff that I usually post, I thought I would go ahead and throw it out there for any of you who have yet to hear it. Calvin Harris is a pretty swell producer and it's nice to see him get out of the "alternative" or "clicky niche" genres. It seems like just yesterday club-goers that were born in the 90's were prancing around the dance floor to "Acceptable in the 80's"...
VIA ROBIN HILTON NPR.org February 14, 2013 1:00 PM The English rock group Depeche Mode owned a chunk of the '80s and '90s with glossy electro-rock hits like "People Are People" and "Personal Jesus." These days the band doesn't have much to prove, and its members, who appear in this new video for the song "Heaven," seem to find themselves at peace, bathed in the radiant glow of light and love. There's an almost-tender vulnerability revealed in this live performance, directed by Timothy Saccenti, perhaps because Depeche Mode's members are a little older now, captured in an intimate studio setting in black and white, without the sheen afforded by multiple layers of glitzy post production. But they also seem a little wiser, more reflective and comfortable in their skin. It's the perfect tone for a song about finding joy in our own mortality. "I will end up dust," sings frontman Dave Gahan. But, "I'm in heaven." "Heaven" was written by Depeche Mode guitarist Martin Gore and is the first single from the band's upcoming album Delta Machine. Gahan tells us via email that the song is one of the reasons he still makes music. "It feels like putting on a pair of boots that I've worn for years, that I love. As soon as Martin played me the demo, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. It was one of those songs that I heard and I immediately knew that I wanted to perform it live in the studio. I could hear the sort of gospel backing that Martin ended up actually doing himself. With a song like 'Heaven,' we were very conscious about not over-working the musical elements so they distracted from the vocal, and the strength of the vocal and the vocal melodies." Delta Machine is Depeche Mode's 13th full-length studio release. It's due out March 26.
